THE TERMINOLOGY OF LIBRARY SCIENCE

Abstract

The master’s thesis entitled The Terminology of Library Science presents the general state of the terminology of library science in the Serbian language and analyses the terminological system which was formed in the last couple of decades in relation to library and information science. The terminology of library science is seen as a characteristic of professional language. The research is conducted on a corpus which excludes sources relating extremely to either library science or information science. The focus is on sources which overlap and refer to both fields. The objects of the study are lexemes which resulted from such an interdisciplinary connection, i.e. their confirmation, registration and analysis. The aim of the thesis is to determine the terminological status in relation to the rules for correctly defining the scope of the relevant concepts correctly coined terms, to define terms by means of lexicographical definitions and to point to the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations in the analysed system of terms. Relations of synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy in the system are described in the case of paradigmatic relations, and so is polysemy. The main aim is accomplished in the dictionary of the terminology of library science.
